Description

"Born in Idaho in 1960, the American artist has dedicated a work to her home state, featuring photographs taken between 1988 and 2019. Working in black and white with a 40 × 50 format, Anne Rearick evokes the epic of a pioneering America, a land enamored with wide-open spaces and fundamental freedom. This America is embodied by her family across several generations, notably represented here by her grandfather—a great charmer, an immediate presence like that of an irresistible actor.
True West, accompanied by the artist’s handwritten text resembling pages torn from a personal diary, begins by recalling a heritage: roadside graves, a church without a door like a stage set, the dust of departure. [...] To preserve the wild within the civilized—that could be Anne Rearick’s poetic motto.", Fabien Ribery, L’Intervalle, November 15, 2019

Anne Rearick was born in the United States in 1960. She follows in the great tradition of humanist documentary photographers such as Dorothea Lange and Diane Arbus. She works over the long term, immersing herself in the daily lives of her subjects as deeply as they allow. The beauty of her images is perfectly matched by analog black-and-white film, and the wide, square 6 × 6 format of her Hasselblad camera captures the finest details: the way skin textures emerge, the subtle background weave of a landscape...

These elements compose scenes impossible to date, imbued with a timeless poetry and universal emotion. From the Basque Country to Kazakhstan, Anne Rearick regularly sets down roots to photograph what moves her most. Represented by the VU’ agency since 1992, her work appears in major international magazines, and she teaches photography and film history in the United States.
